From waterfront dining to urban eateries, regional to global cuisine, casual to upscale, we have it all here on the Seacoast when it comes to restaurant options.
Plus there are the places we like to go for a cold one, cocktails and wine, or a good cup of coffee, and for sweets, treats, and the freshest produce. Everyone has their favorites, and we asked you to get online and vote, choosing the places you like best on the Seacoast for eats and drinks. The voter turnout was impressive (and overwhelming!). We’ve tallied the numbers and determined the best in over 75 categories, including many new choices, from al fresco dining to comfort food, soup to sushi, martinis, cupcakes, nightlife, gourmet markets, and much more.
And now—the Best of Taste 2013!

BAGEL SHOP
PANERA BREAD
Panera Bread might have more than 1,600 locations across North America, but that doesn’t mean that their bagels don’t get special treatment at each shop. “All of our bagels are hand formed by our bakers in each and every cafe, daily,” says head baker Tom Gumpel.“The varieties range from our iconic Cinnamon Crunch to the fan favorite, Asiago Cheese bagel.” He adds that the bagels are cooked in “special ovens that flood the chamber with crust-creating steam.”
Plus, Panera’s bagels are as good for the community as they are for the palate: Panera donates all unsold bread and bagels to local hunger relief agencies at the end of every day. 1465 Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth, N.H., 603-559-9000, panerabread.com, and other locations

ICE CREAM
LAGO’S ICE CREAM & LONE OAK ICE CREAM
There’s a bit of friendly competition between Lago’s in Rye and Lone Oak in Rochester. One invented the Cow Pie ice cream (Lone Oak). The other invented Kahlua Fudge Brownie ice cream (Lago’s). But that competition is good news for folks on the Seacoast: Both ice cream shops are owned by the same family, and when one develops an awesome flavor, the other reaps the sweet rewards, too (the two stores share recipes). Mike Lago bought Lone Oak Ice Cream in 1976, and opened Lago’s in Rye a few years later. In 2010, Mike sold Lago’s to his daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Stephen Grenier.

WINERY
FLAG HILL WINERY
Folks tend to worry that they need to know something about wine before they set foot in a winery, but that couldn’t be further from the truth, especially at Flag Hill Winery. “I think that we make wine fun,” says General Manager Heather Houle. “We want people to have fun and learn about wine without it being pretentious.” Flag Hill is one of the few wineries in the state using homegrown grapes, something that Houle says is “important to the local New Hampshire
agriculture and what a true New Hampshire wine is.” Visit the tasting room year-round to sip wines such as the signature North River Port. 297 North River Road, Lee, N.H., 603-659-2949, flaghill.com
