The 12 Best Seafood Restaurants in Portsmouth

Seven years ago a 1950s Plum Island inn was transformed into blue (lowercase “b”), The Inn on the Beach. General Manager David Geiger describes it as “a South Beach style boutique hotel with New England undertones.” Like its Floridian counterpart, Plum Island is a barrier island. Much of it is a nature reserve, known for its birds. Blue is open year-round, and is the only hotel on Plum Island.

The property is all sleek white lines with accents in cobalt, turquoise, and aquamarine, including the striking walkway of marbles that leads to the entrance. There are 15 accommodation options. In the main building six junior suites face the ocean and come with queen beds, sitting areas, gas fireplaces – the inn is open year round – plus mini-fridges stocked with water and soda. Other oceanfront options are the luxurious Grand Salon, a double level two-bedroom suite that includes a gourmet kitchen, wood-burning fireplace, wrap-around deck, and private hot tub. Penthouse 3 is a top level option with two balconies.

In addition, there are several cottages, mostly located across the street from the beach. These are one- and two-bedroom units with complete kitchens. Whatever room you choose, you’ll be greeted with a bottle of Relax Reisling wine in, of course, a blue bottle.

A stay here is low-key. There’s no restaurant. Rooms include a continental breakfast basket delivered to your room, with various breads and pastries, Greek yogurt, and fresh fruit; rooms are equipped with a Keurig hot beverage maker for coffee, tea, and hot chocolate options. Rates range from $500 to $1400 in the summer and $250 to $600 in the winter. What you get is utter relaxation on the beach, with lounge chairs, and a pair of hot tubs on property for soaking. Manager Sam Golis says, “Plum Island is so unique, it’s cool to share it with our guests, and have it give everything it has to give, even though it’s only a couple miles long.”
