Flawlessly situated on a tree-lined residential street in downtown Newburyport, Garrison Inn has been welcoming guests for more than 150 years. Though it dates back to the Georgian period, the inn was refurbished five years ago to feel elegant yet modern and thoroughly inviting, with an alluring ambiance that extends into its 24 guest rooms, each retaining historical elements, like a working fireplace and wood-paneled window shutters.

Garrison Inn’s refined taste tempts taste buds as well: each morning, Chef Stuart Cunningham’s complimentary “haute” breakfast surprises and enchants, served only to inn guests in the formal yet serene dining room. “Our menu is filled with classic New England favorites and includes our chef’s own special additions,” says owner Joy McFarland. “Guests can choose their breakfast from a menu with a wide selection of choices and our chef is more than happy to prepare special-request breakfasts.” A perennial favorite menu item is Garrison Eggs Benedict, with a poached egg and smoked salmon, topped with saffron and pink pepper-infused hollandaise, and served on a toasted English muffin with a dill and wild Icelandic caviar garnish.

The culinary component of a stay here doesn’t end with breakfast. “In the evenings, our guests enjoy complimentary tea, coffee, and sweets,” says McFarland, with tea from Harney & Sons, and a range of temptations from a local chocolatier.
